On February 26, 1773, the Assembly passed the act for organizing thenew county of Westmoreland. The county was likely named either forWestmoreland County in England or in Virginia, or for both. By the lawwhich created Westmoreland County, Hannastown was temporarilydesignated as the County Seat, court to be held at the "House ofRobert Hanna." On April 6, 1773, the first courts were opened atHanna's house, a two-story log house which was also used as a dwellingby Robert Hanna. This was the first court held west of the AlleghenyMountains. Robert Hanna, along with his friends and neighbors, wereappointed by the same statute trustees to select a permanent countyseat.
Because of a collection of fifteen to twenty houses nearby, the placecame to be known as Hannastown. Hannastown was located on the Forbesmilitary road, the only road leading from eastern Pennsylvania toPittsburg. The "House of Robert Hanna" was also a tavern and hostelryand thus Hanna enjoyed a lucrative patronage because of the road endof "court days". In 1774, a stockade was erected under the advice ofSt. Clair, and this contributed to the growth of Hannastown.
However, the hand of God, or the hand of Guyasuta, Seneca IndianChief, forced the hand of Robert Hanna. On July 13, 1782, the Senecas, aided and abetted by the British, attacked and burned Hannastown, nowcomprising of some thirty houses. This was the last notorious hostileact of the Revolutionary War. The "House of Robert Hanna" and, hence, the court records herein, and the fort were not destroyed. Hannastownwas never rebuilt, though the courts were held here (the courthousenot being burnt) for more than four years afterwards.
The General Assembly then discharged the inactive Hanna and histrustees and appointed five more trustees to establish a permanentseat of justice. After hearings by advocates of Hannastown,Greensburg, and Pittsburg, the latter of which was still part ofWestmoreland County, the committee disagreed. Discharging thesetrustees, the Assembly then appointed new trustees and defined alimited area for locating a Courthouse which excluded the Pittsburgarea. Thses trustees selected Greensburg, then called Newtown, becauseof Christopher Truby from Newton in Bucks County, who owned andsettled on the land which is part of Greensburg.
