Notes

Badollet traces his ancestry back to Jacques Badollet of St. Raval,
Savoy, who was received as a citizen of the city republic of Geneva,
Switzerland in 1555.

Badollet was friends since boyhood with Albert Gallatin (1761 - Aug.
12, 1849), also descended from a minor nobleman of Savoy, who was
received as a citizen of Geneva, Switzerland in 1510.

Both Badollet and Gallatin attended the College and Academy of Geneva
and conducted a collection of correspondence from May 16, 1780 to Oct.
26, 1836. The earliest letters are written in French until after 1790
with much of their latter correspondence published by the Indiana
Historical Society Collections. The Badollet Papers, containing two
journals dated 1792 and 1794 and other miscellaneous letters
concerning family, friends and commissions are deposited in the
Indiana Historical Society Library at Vincennes, Knox Co. IN.

Badollet arrived in America before the fall of 1786 where he helped
Gallatin with his farm at Georges Creek, Fayette Co. PA and eventually
settled on the Monongahela River for 18 years.

When Gallatin was appointed as Secretary of the Treasury under Thomas
Jefferson, which controlled the surveying and sale of public lands, he
appointed Badollet as Register of the Land Office at Vincennes, Knox
Co. IN in 1804. Badollet served in this office until he retired in
January, 1836 and his son, Albert, succeeded him.

Badollet served as a member of the Indiana Constitutional Convention
of 1816 on three committees: Bill of Rights and Preamble, Education,
and General Revision.

Badollet was named to the Board of Trustees of Vincennes University,
from its incorporation in 1806 until 1811. He was a member of the
Vincennes Library Company from its founding in 1806 until his death.
