In the passing of Rev. Samuel H. Millard, for some years pastor of theFirst Christian church here, Johnson City lost a highly esteemed andbeloved citizen. A native of Tennessee, his birth occurred in Sullivancounty in November, 1820, a son of Samuel and Alice Millard. Hisfather engaged in farming in Sullivan county for the greater part ofhis life and was one of the most successful agriculturists of thecommunity in which he resided.
The public schools of Sullivan county afforded Samuel H. Millard hisearly education. Subsequently he entered the ministry of the Christianchurch and his last pastorate was the First Church of Johnson City. Hehad the distinction of being the first pastor of that church. Mr.Millard was highly esteemed in this city and he contributed in amarked degree to the development and improvement of his town, countyand state. His demise occurred on the 11th of May, 1905, at the oldhome on Millard street, which street was named in his honor, he havingbuilt the first home there.
On the 26th of October, 1873, was celebrated the marriage of Samuel H.Millard to Mrs. Mary J. (Taylor) Kitzmiller. She was a daughter of Dr.Caswell C. and Nancy (Duncan) Taylor, natives of Tennessee. Her fatherengaged in farming near Johnson City for several years andsubsequently began the practice of medicine. He became one of theforemost members of the profession during his day. His death occurredon the 10th of October, 1886, at the advanced age of ninety-one years.Mrs. Taylor died in 1844, in her forty-fifth year. Mrs. Millard wasfirst married to Abdial Kitzmiller, the ceremony being performed onthe 30th of January, 1855. To their union four children were born:Nancy, who is residing in La Grande, Oregon; Martin C., likewise aresident of Oregon; Ann R., whose demise occurred on the 24th ofSeptember, 1860; and Mary E. at home. Mr. Kitzmiller was an educator,prominently known in that connection throughout Illinois, Missouri andTennessee. His demise occurred on the 2d of April, 1862, in histhirty-fourth year. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Millard one child wasborn: Samuel T., who is now a bank examiner, with headquarters in St.Louis, Missouri. Mrs. Millard is residing in Johnson City, at the ageof eighty-six years.
Throughout his life Mr. Millard gave his political allegiance to thedemocratic party, having firm belief in the principles of that partyas factors in good government. He was one of the most energetic andresourceful promoters of the city's advancement and was always azealous and practical factor in the efforts made to secure goodgovernment for his city and state.

TAYLOR, Robert Love (son of Nathaniel Green Taylor and brother ofAlfred Alexander Taylor), a Representative and a Senator fromTennessee; born in Happy Valley, Carter County, Tenn., July 31, 1850;attended Pennington Seminary and Buffalo Institute (later MilliganCollege), Tennessee; engaged in making bar iron and in tobaccoraising; studied law in Jonesboro, Tenn.; was admitted to the bar in1878 and practiced in [p.1902] Elizabethton and Jonesboro; elected asa Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1879-March 3, 1881);unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1880 to the Forty-seventhCongress and for election in 1882 to the Forty-eighth Congress;practiced law and also engaged in the newspaper business in JohnsonCity, Tenn., in 1880; presidential elector on the Democratic ticketof Cleveland and Hendricks in 1884; pension agent at Knoxville, Tenn.,1885-1887; was Governor of Tennessee 1887-1891; presidential electoron the Democratic ticket of Cleveland and Stevenson in 1892; resumedthe practice of law in Chattanooga, Tenn.; again served as Governorof Tennessee from 1897 to 1899; elected as a Democrat to the UnitedStates Senate in January 1907 for the term beginning March 4, 1907,and served until his death in Washington, D.C., March 31, 1912;interment in the Old Gray Cemetery, Knoxville, Tenn.; reinterred inMonta Vista Burial Park, Jefferson City, Tenn., in 1938.

TAYLOR, Robert Love, governor of Tennessee, was born in Happy Valley,Sycamore Shoals, E. Tenn., July 31, 1850; son of the Hon. NathanielGreen (1819-1887) and Emma (Haynes) Taylor. He was brought up on afarm; attended schools in Athens, Tenn., and Pennington, N.J., andsubsequently engaged in making bar iron and in tobacco raising. Hestudied law in Jonesboro, Tenn., 1876-78; was a Democraticrepresentative from the first Tennessee district, in the 46thcongress, 1879-81, and defeated for re-election in 1880 and 1882. Hewas married, in 1880, to Sarah L. Baird of Asheville, N.C., making hishome in Johnson City, Tenn., where he practised law. He waselector-at-large on the Cleveland and Hendricks ticket, 1884; servedas U.S. pension agent at Knoxville, Tenn., 1885-87; was electedDemocratic governor of Tennessee in 1886, his brother, Alfred A,Taylor (q.v.), being his opponent. He served as governor, 1887-91, andagain, 1897-99, meanwhile practising law in Chattanooga, Tenn., andserving a second time as elector-at-large on the Democratic ticket in1892. He was the unsuccessful nominee for U.S. senator in the latteryear, his position as elector-at-large handicapping his personalcanvass as a candidate. In 1892 he made a lecture tour of thesouthern and western states on "The Fiddle and the Bow." He is theauthor of: Bob Taylor's Tales.
