The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans:Volume I
BIBB, William Wyatt, governor of Alabama, was born in Virginia, Oct.1, 1780. He was graduated at William and Mary college, and at theUniversity of Pennsylvania M.D. in 1801. He removed to Georgia; was amember of the Georgia senate and house of representatives, and waselected to the 9th congress as a Democrat to fill the unexpired termof Thomas Spalding resigned. And was re-elected to the 10th, 11th and12th congresses, serving, 1807-'13. He was elected to the UnitedStates senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of WilliamH. Crawford, who was appointed minister to France, serving, 1813-'16;removed to Alabama (then a Territory), in 1817; became governor andwas elected governor upon the admission of Alabama as a state in 1819,and served until his death at Fort Jackson, Ala., July 9, 1820.

BIBB, William Wyatt, a Representative and a Senator from Georgia; bornin Prince Edward County, Va., October 1, 1780; pursued an academiccourse; attended William and Mary College at Williamsburg and wasgraduated from the medical department of the University ofPennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1801; moved to Petersburg, ElbertCounty, Ga., and began the practice of medicine; member of the Statehouse of representatives 1803-1805; resumed the practice of medicine;elected as a Democrat to the Ninth Congress to fill the vacancy causedby the resignation of Thomas Spalding; reelected to the Tenth and tothe three succeeding Congresses and served from January 26, 1807,until his resignation November 6, 1813, having been elected Senator;elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by theresignation of William H. Crawford and served from November 6, 1813,to November 9, 1816, when he resigned; moved to Alabama Territory andwas appointed the first Territorial Governor; elected as the firstGovernor under the State Constitution and served from March 1817 untilhis death near Coosada Station, Elmore County, Ala., July 9, 1820;interment in the family cemetery, Coosada Station, Ala.
