FREMONT, JOHN CHARLES, soldier, author, was born Jan. 21, 1813, inSavannah, Ga. He was a famous soldier and politician who in 1856 wasthe first republican candidate for the presidency, and served duringthe civil war as a major-general in the federal army. He was theauthor of Report of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in1842, and to Oregon and Northern California in 1843-44; Frémont'sExplorations; and Memoirs of My Life. He died in 1890.
