John Alexander Blevins
John Alexander Blevins, judge of the St. Louis Circuit court, was bornin Abington, Washington county, Va., October 29, 1860, a son ofZacharia C. and Susan S. Blevins. When he was nine years old he movedwith his parents to Versailles, Morgan county. Mo. Here, for severalyears, he attended public schools, and afterwards took a course inSimpson's Institute. He read law in the office of Col. Anderson W.Anthony. Judge Blevins was admitted to the bar in 1882. He afterwardstook the three years' course in the Columbian University, Washington,D. C., and was graduated from that institution in 1885 with the degreeof Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws. He was appointed to a positionin the office of Hon. Adlai E. Stephenson, who was then the firstassistant postmaster general, and who was afterwards electedvice-president of the United States. He was, soon after hisappointment, selected by the postmaster general, William F. Vilas, totake charge of his personal and official correspondence pertaining tohis own state, Wisconsin. After three years service in Washington,Judge Blevins spent nearly a year in California, as his health hadbeen greatly impaired by incessant work. In 1898 he returned toVersailles and resumed the practice of law. In 1890 he was electedprosecuting attorney of Morgan county, and in 1892 was re-elected.Judge Blevins opened a law office in St. Louis, in October, 1894. Hewas, for a while, the senior partner in the law firm of Blevins, Lyons& Swarts, but for four years prior to his going on the bench he waspracticing alone. The Missouri General Assembly, in March, 1903,passed a law increasing the number of circuit judges for the city ofSt. Louis, and on March 27, 1903, Mr. Blevins was appointed to theCircuit bench by Governor Alexander M. Dockery. Judge Blevins hasalways taken a part in politics, and has uniformly supported thenominees and policies of the Democratic party. He is a member of theJefferson Club, of which he was one of the organizers.
On April 29, 1884, Judge Blevins was married to Miss Cerro GordoMcMinn, of Versailles, Mo. They have one son and one daughter.Business address, No. 7, Court House, St. Louis, Missouri.
