At age 22, John enlisted for 3 years in the Union Army. He mustered inon Nov 10 1861 at Camp Hoskins, Pulaski Co. KY. He was assigned toCapt. Johnson's Co. 12th Regiment. By Sep 30 1863, John was promotedto Corporal. At some point during the war, he contracted a severe caseof measles. On Nov 30 1864, he was slightly wounded in the face in theBattle of Franklin Co. KY. He was honorably discharged on Feb 3 1865.
He later moved to Sonora, MO, probably with brother, Gaines. John wasburied with his son, Johnny, in Sonora, his death resulting from theearlier bout with the measles. He had never fully recovered. Thebodied were later moved to High Creek Cemetery due to the annual riverflooding. Lois is also buried there.
