Frances E. Whitworth Morison was eldest of four children. She
was in nursing school when she married Rufus A. Morison. She was
direct and tolerated few excuses from her children or anyone
else. She was practical, of great mental acuity, inner directed
and a perfectionist. Frances was a brilliant bridge player. She
was noted in the country as a wonderful cook, baker and a
gardener.
She sometimes remarked that cooking was similar to art or
playing music: " you have to feel a certain way and act on it. "
She expressed her warmth and love of our family through her art:
wonderful food and a beautiful home. Our home was always warm
and incredibly clean. . As a child, my sister, brothers and I
expected and received criticism when we did not perform to her
expectations.
She was always arose and went to bed before anyone else. She
worked hard and tirelessly throughout her life. She did not
know the meaning of quiet, until she went to bed. She slept
lightly and was known to tell us to not breathe so loudly if we
were so unfortunate as to be in the proximity of her room! She
enjoyed a drink, but only one. She was naive and had a sense of
humor that could be puckish. She enjoyed a practical joke and
participated in many. She endured endless teasing by my father.
The family gathered each evening for dinner and we were required
to dress for dinner. Her elegant productions of these times were
special and provided Father a stage for his subjects of
conversation, music and poetry. Guests were frequently present
at these dinners.
She was loyal and kind to a fault. She was a loyal friend and a
fierce enemy. She was quick tempered and incisive in making
decisions. Through out her life she was a beautiful woman who
tolerated little nonsense, and I think that was confusing to
many people.
Although she was raised in the Methodist Church, Frances was
not religious and toward the end of her life considered herself
an atheist. She often recounted that her Grandfather Copenhaver
came to her house on Sundays to take her to church. While
walking he would use the crook of his cane to pull those who
fell behind along.
In retrospect, I feel that the advice from the Spartan mothers
to their sons going to war was hers also: "Come back with your
shield or on it."
Notes by Rufus Morison 6/23/95.
