Notes

Thomas Rolfe was born in 1615 in Richmond, Indian Territory, VA
(Smith's Fort Plantation). Died in 1675 in VA.

Thomas was taken charge of soon after the death of his mother by his
uncle, Henry Rolfe of London, where he was brought up to manhood.
Shortly after, he decided to return to Virginia, where he was born,
and did so in 1640. There is little doubt but that he settled there
on his father's property, "Farina," near Henricopolis, sixteen miles
below Richmond. He was awarded the Chickahominy fort with 400 acres
of land and houses, boats and ammunition by the Governor of VA. This
was an extraordinary award and attests to the fact that he was a man
possessing substantial means, was brave and loyal and had the
confidence of the public. He was also allowed to visit his Indian
family, his mother's sister and his uncle after the death of
Powhattan.

In 1946 the Virginia Conservation Commission erected a marker at the
site of "Kippax" which is located in Prince George County on the south
side of the Appomattox River not far from the present city of
Petersburg. It is believed that both Thomas and Jane Rolfe Bolling
are buried at "Kippax."

He married Elizabeth Washington in Sep 1632 in St. James Church,
Clerkenwell, London. Elizabeth died soon after the birth of her
daughter.

He also married Jane Poythress in 1640 in VA. Jane Poythress was born
in 1615 in Jamestown, James City, VA. Died in 1659 in Charles City,
VA. Jane and Thomas had three sons who died young.

Notes

John Rolfe was born on 6 May 1585 in Heacham, Norfolk, England. Died
in 1622 in Jamestown, James City, VA. John was First Secretary and
Recorder General of Virginia. In 1609 on his way to Jamestown, his
ship "The Sea Venture" ran aground in Bermuda. John came to Jamestown
May 30, 1610. His first wife died 1612 at Jamestown.

At the time of his marriage to Pocahontas, John was a childless
widower. On June 2, 1609, he and his late wife were among the some 500
persons who left England in Sir George Somers' fleet of nine ships
which were laden with a "third supply" of provisions and settlers for
the struggling Colony of Virginia. The fleet, following the Canaries
route, entered the tropics where a number of those aboard succumbed to
yellow fever, and on July 25, near the Bahamas, the fleet was struck
by a terrific forty-four hour storm, a storm that is believed to have
been the basis for Shakespeare's "The Tempest." The nine ships were
scattered; one, "the Catch," was destroyed; and the "Sea Venture" was
so badly damaged that when if finally reached the islands of Bermuda,
it was driven aground and wrecked on August 7. Fortunately, all of
the "Sea Venture" personnel survived, the lucky ones included Admiral
Somers; Virginia's Vice Admiral, Sir Christopher Newport; the Colony's
Lieutenant-Governor, Sir Thomas Gates; and last and possibly among the
least, John Rolfe and his wife. The shipwrecked party made use of
materials salvaged from the "Sea Venture" and constructed two small
ships which they hoped would carry them on to Jamestown.

Weeks before the two ships were completed, Rolfe's wife gave birth to
a daughter who, on February 21, 1610, was christened Bermuda Rolfe and
who died soon after. Rolfe's wife also died soon after the two ships
reached Jamestown on June 2, 1610.

In the spring of 1616, Sir Thomas Dale returned to England aboard the
"Treasurer" taking with him a group that included a Spanish spy, an
Irish traitor, John Rolfe and Pocahontas as well as Pocahontas' sister
and her sister's husband, one of her father's tribal councilors and
"several young Indians of both sexes." The ship arrived in Plymouth
England on May 31, 1616 and during the months that followed,
Pocahontas became the object of considerable publicity.

John died between May 10, 1622 (the date of his will) and October 7,
1622, the date upon which the news of his death reached his brother
Henry in England. He may have been killed in the massacre of Good
Friday, March 22, 1622, or he may have died of natural causes. In his
will he says that he is "sicke in body, but of perfecte mind and
memory." His will was probated in London's prerogative Court of
Canterbury on May 31, 1630 by his father-in-law, Capt. William Pierce.

Rolfe, John (1585-1622), English colonist of Jamestown, Virginia, who was married to Pocahontas, the younger daughter of the Native American chief Powhatan. Rolfe was born in Norfolk, England. In 1609 he sailed to America with the expedition led by English navigator Sir George Somers. He reached Virginia in 1610 and became a planter. Rolfe cultivated the strain of tobacco that became Virginia's staple crop-exports of tobacco to England provided economic stability for the colony.
In 1614 Rolfe, a widower, married Pocahontas. Their marriage brought a time of peace between the colonists and Native Americans that lasted for eight years. In 1616 the couple, with their infant son, went to England. Pocahontas received a royal reception, but she became ill and died the following year. Rolfe returned to Virginia, where in 1621 he became a member of the colony's first Council of State. He was killed in the massacre of 1622.
