Major Thomas Bolling was born on 18 Jul 1735 in Cobbs, VA. Died on 7
Aug 1804.

Thomas and Elizabeth were first cousins and it was related that one
was over-frugal and the other over-proud and though both were somewhat
unsociable, they were very hospitable and much respected by their
visitors. He rode in a single-seated, single-horse chair with a
hatless, shoeless black man with his bare legs and feet dangling down
as the driver. Elizabeth, however, traveled in state in her
English-built chariot and four, with coachman and postilion and
footman in bright yellow liveries. Her grandson recalls seeing her
when he was a child and she was very old, in a Queen Elizabeth ruff,
sitting upright and stately as a queen in her ample, high-backed
armchair, behind which always stood her waiting maid. She was an
object of awe and wonder to the little child.

Thomas was born deaf as were three of his children. He sent his
eldest son, John, to Edinburgh in 1771 and put him under the care of
Thomas Braidwood, the famous and successful teacher of speach to the
deaf. The others, Thomas and Mary, followed in 1775 and they all
remained at Braidwood's Institute during the American Revolution,
returning to "Cobbs" in 1783. John died soon after his return.
Thomas studied law but made no use of his acquisition except as a
magistrate of his county. Two of William Bollings children were also
born deaf.

He married Elizabeth Gay on 24 Nov 1757

Notes

Thomas Bolling was deaf and never married. He was called a miracle of
accomplishment. His articulation became so good that his family and
friends understood him in conversation and in reading aloud. He died
at "Gayment" the residence of his niece, Mrs. J. H. Bernard, in
Caroline Co.

In an obituary printed in the Richmond Enquirer on Feb. 18, 1836, his
nephew Judge Robertson said: "He composed and wrote in a peculiar,
clear and graphic style, and attained an artificial facility of speech
almost equal to natural. His grace of manner, vivacity and power of
imitation, made him the wonder and adminration of strangers and the
delight of friends and relatives."
